Outdoor Learning Experience

My class from Tom Thomson public school went into our schoolyard to explore. We learned about the habitats, ecosystems and living things that were all around us. We also found some problems with the school environment and are making an effort to fix them. Here is one of the problems that we discovered.

There is erosion in the creek. Why? The students are walking on the dirt that touches the water in the creek. They walk on it so much that the dirt turns into mud and then its roots can’t hold the dirt together and there are trees trying to grow on that dirt. If trees are growing on mud they will tilt and after a while they will fall into the creek. This could harm or kill animals in the creek, so they are going to plant some more trees and flowers and block off areas where the problem is worse.

We also found that there are a lot of different battles where nature has won. For example we found a tennis ball with dirt and grass on it. It looked like a miniature earth and how earth should be. I hope that someday our earth will look like this.

We had a lot of fun learning about the environment, animals and habitats in our schoolyard.
